Floating Potential Condition

The floating potential condition imposes a constraint on the electric potential \(\phi\), requiring that its value in a given region be constant:

\[\left. \phi \right|_{\Omega} = \mathrm{const},\]

where \(\Omega\) is the given region of space. This condition is used in situations where a certain region of space must have a constant electric potential \(\phi=\mathrm{const}\), but at the same time it is in contact with other regions in which \(\phi\) is not known in advance, but is determined by solving an equation under given boundary conditions.
