Cell Aspect Ratio¶
Cell Aspect Ratio is a scalar coefficient with one value for each cell. It
gives the aspect ratio of the cell at its center:
\[
r = \sqrt{\lambda_\text{max} / \lambda_\text{min}},
\]
where:
- \(r\) is the aspect ratio (dimensionless).
- \(\lambda_\text{max}\) and \(\lambda_\text{min}\) are the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of \(J^\mathsf{T} J\) (dimensionless).
- \(J\) is the Jacobian of the mapping from the reference cell to the cell.
A value of 1 shows a cell without distortion. A large value shows a stretched, flat, or sheared cell. Such cells can decrease the accuracy.
